The terms Swiss Army Knife and jack of all trades are often used, but they are often hyperbole. However, compact equipment (including compact track loaders, skid steers and small articulated loaders) is being used on almost every jobsite and operates in multiple applications and environments, much like a Swiss Army Knife.

For decades, heavy equipment dominated the landscapes of construction sites, and they are still the main workhorses of most jobs. But compact equipment continues to gain traction. The growth began in the early 2000s, according to Bobcat Marketing Manager Mike Fitzgerald. This is primarily because of the “significant enhancements to technology, performance and operator comfort in today’s units.”
