The construction industry has too long been troubled by high levels of addiction, overdose, and suicide. A group of industry experts and leaders are coming together in Arlington to discuss these problems.
Content offerings have expanded from a two-day event at the kick-off in 2022 to four days of programming in 2025. The theme of the fourth annual International Construction Working Minds Summit is "Transformation and Tactical Takeaways: For Individuals, Teams, Organizations, and the Construction Industry."
“The industry has prioritized the physical safety of its workers historically but is now building incredible momentum in addressing issues of psychological safety,” said Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas, United Survivors president and summit co-founder and co-chair. "Among the goals are for participants to walk away with tactical strategies they can implement immediately to create healthier workplaces and stronger communities," she continued.
The summit will be held at the Sheraton Arlington Hotel. There is also a storytelling training to help those who have been personally impacted by suicide, addiction, or overdose craft their narratives to reduce isolation and stigma.
The physical and mental demands of construction jobs play a huge role in why the industry has the highest rates of addiction and suicide.
“We are inspired to see the construction industry stand in solidarity to face these daunting mental health concerns. Our scope and attendance have grown significantly since our inaugural summit in 2022, and this is an exciting and hopeful time in our movement,” said Spencer-Thomas.
